In an op-ed published by CNN today, Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs Fellow and Senior Adviser to the Special Representative for the Arctic at the U.S. State Department Walter Berbick called for  the United States “to come together as “One Arctic Nation” and to take a leading role in the region, which in many ways holds the key to our future at home.”  In doing so, he noted that the Arctic “is open to us, and our own efforts in it — civilian, commercial and military — urgently need greater attention,” and called for federal investments in Arctic infrastructure, taking the steps necessary to increase the nation’s capacity to clearly define, prioritize, and understand threats, strengthening allies and partnerships, building a national Arctic security force, competing in the new Arctic international economic order, and restructuring U.S. national security institutions.
